Everyday is a winding road

Sunday, March 26th, started well.  Ashley and Kari went down and grabbed some breakfast.  Ashley is still under the weather at this point, but signs are pointing to a rally.  Gracie and Katie were still sleeping and my Achilles' tendon didn't really hurt that much.

I grabbed my shoes and headed of on a trail run.  It was amazing down from the rim and through the rain forest.  It was cool and quiet as I ran between Ohia trees and giant ferns.  There were some super cool paths through the rock.

Down and then back up to run along the crater rim.  No one was out, just me and streaming bluffs.  Kileaua was to my left smoking away to my right Mono Loa rise like Olympus to the sky.  Up and along the rim, I was greeted by native birds and not a single person.  I discovered a 6 ton rock that was throwen out of the crater some 2000 feet back in 1590 or so when geologist think a series of large eruptions rocked the island.  At the top a vacation selfie.

At least there is one photo of me on this vacation.

Then back down to the Volacano House.  The trip down was not as fun given the my Achilles started to sing about a mile out.

After a quick shower, we packed and headed out on Scenic highway 11 around the slopes of Mona Loa.
We made a couple of stops along the way.

The black sand beach at Punalu'u was amazing.  We waded in the Pacific and enjoyed the amazing black sand.  I wish we could have stayed longer.

Ashley rising like a Phoenix to enjoy this vacation.

Black sand, green plants, blue ocean.  Amazing

From the beach we headed to the city of Punalu'u.  Only to discover this.

Ashley says the Apple turnovers deserve a thumbs up.  I don't ever recall being able to hear sarcasm in a photo till now.

Grace was much more excited to share with the world that she had visited the southernmost bakery in the USA.

Back in the car for 2 hours of winding road until we made it to Kona.  A visit to Long's drug for cough drops, Mucinex and some Blistex.  Then back on the road through traffic until we arrived at the Fairmont Orchid.  We checked in changed and went to the pool.

This happened.  Let the relaxation begin.
