The morning started off quietly. Some of the crew read books, some enjoyed a massage or facial and some relaxed in the solarium which provides both a little warmth but also a reasonable view. Early the wind was up quite a bit so the ride was a little bumpy.
As I was sitting in my lounge chair chilling, a random reddish haired lady with an angry face came up and started yelling about where her stuff had gone and how long we had been here. Now most of her anger was directed at a nice couple at the end of our row. They gently reassured her that all of us had been sitting here off and on for over 2 hours and that they/we had not seen her stuff. Undeterred this lady kept raging. This is unbelievable!!!! I thought this was a safe place!!!! I can’t believe you people stole my stuff. It was at this point she grabbed one of our celebrity bags. She was reminded that was not hers by this nice couple. I finally realized she was yelling at me too. She continued to thrash around huffing and puffing and accusing everyone in our 2 rows of stealing her stuff. Her arms were flapping like a great goose, her face redder than a baboon’s butt.
Before we continue to the end let’s exam this. One, if any of us had stolen her stuff would we continue to sit there? The answers is NO unless you are the dumbest thief in the world. If we stole her stuff would we engage her in conversation? Again the answer is no unless you were struck dumb.
Back to the story, finally as this lady fumes and fusses Lara stands up and asks her if she is in the right spot. “Yes, I know exactly where I was.” . Lara gently reassured her again. “OK, but it is easy to get turned around on the boat it happens to me from time to time.” At that moment the lady turns 2 circles and all the color goes out of her face. “Ohhh, that’s my stuff over there. sorry”. The sorry was a whisper. Poof she was gone. So that added some excitement. Remember step 1: Remain calm. I would also suggest buying a beer for the people you accuse of being thieves.
We ended up chilling out most of the day till about 5:30-6 PM when we finally reached Cape Horn. We were about 1 hour late since the ship was battling 35-45 mph headwinds.
Brace yourself cause there are a lot of pictures of Cape Horn coming your way
The ocean is just smashing the rock islands around Cape Horn.
The lighthouse at Cape Horn. It is run by the Chilean government
Albatross monument was place to commemorate all the sailors lost attempting to sail these waters as they circumnavigated the globe. Erected in 1992 this sculpture is the work of José Balcell.
Too windy for a Chilean flag 🇨🇱 so you need to settle for the paint on this little hut.
Cape Horn from a far - lighthouse is center right
Cape Horn marks the Northern boundary of the Drake Passage which connects the Atlantic Ocean with Pacific Ocean. Cape Horn is the southern end of Tierra del Fuego. Cape Horn is home to cool temperatures, strong winds, big storms and strong currents. We definitely had a little taste of the winds and the waves today. I can’t imagine sailing this area ever.
A sailor who had rounded Cape Horn would often get a gold loop earring in their left ear, the side closest to the cape when sailing from East to west. The sailor could also dine with one foot on the table. If the sailor has also rounded the Cape of Good Hope then the sailor could dine with both feet on the table.
Cape Horn is a mythological place in the sailing world and from what I saw today I can see why.
