Down the street past the Civil War monument I pedaled. A left past the hospital and this appeared on my left.
The old mill
Built in 1746 it is the oldest functioning windmill in the USA. It can still grind corn to meal at a rate of about 5 bushels and hour.
From there, I headed out on Surfside Road and eventually made it to Surfside beach. It is a really big beach with plenty of room for games and dogs. Not many people are on the beach at 7 AM in Nantucket.

From there I headed back to Nantucket. I felt like I had a little more time to kill so I headed down Fairgrounds Road and on to Milestone Road. At this point I turned in to Forest Gump and just kept riding. I eventually ended up in Siasconset.
It was a fishing village on the east side of the island. Not much there. Post office and a General store appear to be the major gathering points. Nobody in that little village believes in street signs either. I finally escaped Siasconset on Sankarty
Now if you run into and old guy with a limp, you find the yellow vertical guide way by the trail and make a right turn you eventually will arrive at Sankaty Head Lighthouse.
Sankaty Head Lighthouse. Again you can just go up and knock on the door. No one is there because it is completely automated.
The Lighthouse was built in 1850 and guards the eastern shore. Shoals near this side of the island have been dreaded for centuries. On a stormy night in 1892 a 3 mast schooner became trapped on the shoals. The keeper dispatched the coast guard and the coast guard managed to rescue 7 sailors. However, the Coast Guard and sailors could not make it back through the storm. They all anchored out on the shoals and eventually rowed to shore, safe 26 hours later. Crazy
The mark and the Lighthouse. The historical society moved the Lighthouse to protect it from cliff erosion.

Now I have to get home so I head back on Polpis Road. Great bike trail but much more up and down then I wanted by this time. I hit the roundabouts and it is 9:00 now. I make the wrong turn and start heading out of town on Surfside road again. I finally get turned around and eventually make it home at 9:45. When I get to the house, I have a water, a Diet Coke and a beer.
The crew was awake and ready to roll by 11.
TB and I in front of 2 Lilly Street.
Hells Angels are not as tough as these two.
We headed out to Cisco beach. The trail there was pretty nice so not much drama getting there. TB and Elle took the Jeep out and set up base camp.
The crew at the beach. The eclipse is happening.

After a fun day at the beach, TB and Elle packed up the Jeep and we headed to Cisco brewery for a pit stop before home. Almost everyone got on their bikes to head back as well. Grace didn't because she lost her key on the beach. Mr. and Mrs. Anseth had a brief but vigorous discussion about the pros and cons when trusting a bike key to a 10 year old at the beach.
Eventually, the guy from the bike shop came. I gave him $15 and he gave me a key to open the lock. Grace and I were off to catch the others.
Cisco brewery is an interesting place. Food trucks, live music and a winery, distillery and brewhouse. It is much more like a compound designed by lost Jimmy Buffet Parrotheads.
Raw 167 sampler did not disappoint.
Finally at home we took a quick shower and the adults, this term should probably be used loosely, went to dinner at Company of the Cauldron. Popovers and lobster, the food was great and the wine was good too. Maybe a little too good.

This is the last picture in my phone when I woke up the next morning. If you don't here ominous music in your head you should.
