Hasta La Vista, Baby

Saturday, March 30th, 2019 was our last day at Isla Palenque.  One more day on the Pacific coast of Panama basking in the sun and enjoying 88 + degrees Fahrenheit.

I was up early and took a walk on the beach.  Kari was actually up and came along too.  Nothing like a nice relaxing walk on the beach to start your day.  We did have a little company on our walk.

Howler monkeys out for a snack.  They could be confused with Ashley and Katie based on their behavior.

This one wanted in on the action too.

After the walk a little French Toast was in order.

So French Toasty...... yum

After breakfast, the girls played in the pool or read or snap chatted.  Kari and I enjoyed one final beach yoga session.  It was actually great.  We were joined by another couple from Miami so we had a little bigger group.  We packed, swam in the ocean and enjoyed one final lunch.  A couple of Balboas and it wa time to go.

One last look at the beach heading from our casita to the pool.

One last shot of the Gulf of Chiquití

Goodbye Casita

Goodbye outdoor sinks, shower and tub.  Thank for the help little mice getting Kari ready.

A 1.5 hour bus ride to David and the a 45 min flight on Panama Air and we were back in Panama City.

Yeah Air Panama!!!!

We arrived at the Hilton.

Wild Kingdom

Friday, March 29th, 2019 started early with a 6:30 AM bird watching hike on the island.  Can you guess who got up with me to go on that hike.  The correct answer is no one.  I met Enrique and one other guest and we started out with a bumpy car ride but eventually we arrived at a location on the island where someone had planted several fruit trees in the past.

These are Turkey vultures - they circle different parts of the island and are generally very unattractive birds.

This is a green parrot that lives on the island.  They supposedly mate for life. It is a very hardy bird apparently.  Actually if one is illegally capture, the other on often struggles to survive.

One more because I like the colors.

This is so close to a perfect picture 😢

After our walk, it was time for breakfast of French Toast and crispy bacon.  After that, we headed to the marina for a snorkeling tour with our guide, Chava.  We had about a 20 min boat ride to the reef.  The Gulf of Chiriquí National Marine Park was our destination.  Snorkel gear, check, fins, check, GoPro, check, Grace staying on the boat under a towel, check. You would think a Western Swim League Champion (Breast stroke) would like to spend a little time in the ocean with the other fishes.

Probably around 20 ft of water with reasonable visibility.  The girls were down on it.  To see why just look at last year’s spring break photos.  Not as many fish but definitely some bigger fish.  Parrot fish and groupers were nice.   Green sea turtles like to feed there and I found one to follow around for awhile.  Oddly beautiful, once those turtles decided they have had enough- a couple of strong flipper pushes and they are gone.

Like the color in this one.

This parrot fish was fast

Just keep swimming, just keep swimming and maybe you will get a decent picture

Love watching turtles swim especially after doing yoga. So relaxing. Namaste 🙏🏻

One more with feeling

After our snorkeling adventure we sat on the beach.  We enjoy fresh sweet pineapple and melon as well as ice cold Coca Colas.  It was pretty sweet.

We returned to the resort around 2. Ashley and Katie alternated between hammocks and chairs while listening to music or snap chatting.  Grace played in the pool with a group of kids for about 4 hours and only managed to get some minor sunburning, despite her lack of compliance.

Kari and I had a yoga class at 4. Eagle poses, Candlestick, the wheel, Warrior 2.  I started looking at my Garmin 15 minutes in.  At 30 minutes I started praying for the kids to fight so I could have a break.  I finished with Kari it was a very nice and invigorating workout.  Quick shower, dinner and one last sunset was on the agenda.

Blew out my flip flop, cut my toe, had to...

Thursday, March 28th,  2019 started slowly and with a relaxed vibe.  The day was designed to be a relaxation day with no dad planned excursions.  A lot of time on the beach and a lot of time by the pool.

Kari and I did yoga by the beach at 10 AM.  I am pretty sure our yoga instructor thought I was going to faint during Warrior 2 or something like that.

Breakfast consisted of French toast with a honey syrup and crispy bacon.  The girls all got something called a smoothie bowl.  Kari chose a fruit plate.  I am traveling with savages. After breakfast it was walks on the beach and time in th pool.

At 3:30 I signed up for rock fishing.  No this is supposedly traditional Panamanian rock fishing.  Imagine a 1 1/2” round wooden stick about 5” long.  You cut a little groove in it and then just wrap the fishing line around the stick.  Eventually you put a hook and a sinker weight on the end.  Now put some shrimp on the hook swing the line underhand and toss it into the ocean.  If you do it right the line unspools easily.  If you do it wrong it falls at your feet.  It took a couple of attempts but I finally got it working.

After a few minutes I caught this monster.

It is a little snapper.  It is also the only fish caught by anyone rock fishing.  Now no other Anseth went because there was no WiFi on this rock.

On the way back my foot slipped and I blew out my flip flop.  I also cut my big toe 😢.  First I tried to use a hook to sew my flip flop back together with a horizontal mattress stitch through the sole.  I couldn’t straighten the hook so I walked barefoot across the rocks back to the trail.  Now the trail was the hard part all broken sticks and leaves. I knew this was gonna hurt.  Suddenly, I look to my left and there is a washed up shoe next to us.  It was a right shoe to boot. 😂. I shake out the shoe, no spiders, and slip it on.  I hop/ hobble up the trail.  Get in the car and head back to the sand of the beach.  There is a lesson here.  When God breaks a flip flop he will float you and old shoe to use.

Back at the resort it was a quick shower and dinner.

At dinner I enjoyed Captain Morgan’s Ghost

Walked home under the star6,  completely relaxed.

Namaste!!!!!

Down like a sack of empanadas

Wednesday, March 27th was a travel day.  It was windy and misty In Boquete so we were not entirely sad to leave. A quick breakfast at the Rock and it was time to say goodbye to the Riverside Inn, a quiet small hotel of only 6 rooms.

Riverside Inn from the road

The front entrance of the Riverside Inn

The lobby our rooms were to the left.

A great hotel if you are seeking peace and tranquility.  Both of those ideas were harder to come by with the Anseth girls stomping around and banging on doors.  Kari will not miss the squeaky beds that bounced her around when I tossed and turned at night.  My rotator cuff may actually be an issue in the future.  Ashley and I were the only ones to take hot showers mostly because I would take a shower almost exactly 12 hours after Ashley finished.

Our drive was uneventful.  Our driver was nice but he was suppose to be bilingual.  I am not sure if that word means what I think it means.  Even using google translate he didn’t seem to understand either English or Spanish.  We arrived without incident and after a 15 min boat ride we were at the resort.

From Boquete we traveled by van to the Pacific coast of Panama and the Isla Palenque.

Isla Palenque is ridiculous 8 bungalows along the beach   You feel a little bit like Swiss Family Robinson.

Looking back to the bungalow from the path

The old number 7 from the beach.

Fiddler crabs.  These  little guys are zooming all over the beach.

Artsy.....so Artsy

Where we eat dinner

In the afternoon we signed up for a cooking class to make empanadas.  Grace, Ashley (surprising), Kari and I entered the kitchen.  Corn meal, salt, sugar, water was all we needed to create 5 symmetrical empanada corn meal spheres.  Charlie the chef browned the meat, onions, peppers, garlic, water and green salsa.  He explained you the ground beef cooked through and dry for the empanadas to taste right.

Now that the meat was cooked and seasoned, Charlie made a reduction sause of water, brown sugar and a tree tomato sauce.

We were preparing to stuff the empanadas when Grace turned to Kari and asked if she thought it was hot in the kitchen.  Kari turned to me and said “Grace is pale.  Really pale.  I think she might....”. I said “What?!?! Insert a confused face here.  At the moment Grace passed out.  She went down like a sack of bricks. I caught her and lifted her up but she was out for the count.  I got behind her, while Charlie helped hold her and carrried her out of the kitchen about the time we hit the kitchen door Grace said “What happened??  Everything started moving. “.  Ashly was standing there like “ is she OK?  Is Grace OK?”  Ashley does love her sister.

This is what you look like after you faint in the kitchen.  Drinking water, Ginger Ale and eating ice cream.

If you are wondering where Katie was she was in a hammock listening to episodes 2,3 and 4 of her new favorite podcast, Dr. Death.

We eventually returned to the kitchen to stuff our empanadas.  While Gracie rested in the shade.

Empanadas.  The one on the left may be the best empanada ever made by a guest at Isla Palenque.  #madskills

The kitchen staff.  Now someone needs to clean this up.

They tasted even better than they looked

Grace was rallying at this point and ready for the night.

Nice work G-Money

Tiradito fish cut like sashimi in a citrus sause #amazing #ScottyRobyoucandothis!!!!

After diner it was a walk back to the bungalow and bed.  There were a million stars in the sky so I just stood out in the beach for 30 minutes or so pondering existence and my part of it.  One of the few times where there is so little ambient light that you can see the Milky Ways streaming out above you.

The Milky Way over Isla Palenque.  Can you find Orion’s Belt?

WWCSD. What would Carl Segan do?

Not sure what adventures we will see tomorrow.
