White Knuckled and loving it.

8/28/2019 was our day in Geiranger.  My plan was to get up at 5:30 AM and run a little and enjoy our cruise into the fjords.  When I checked the window we were already deep in the fjords so I just grabbed my camera and head to the upper deck.  It was cold and quiet.  I was amazed by how still the water in the fjords could be.  The boat serves hot chocolate and danish rolls along the way.  Amazing ride in we finally made it Geiranger at around 7:30 AM.

Cruising into Geiranger, early!!!

Geiranger in the distance

Scanning for Geiranger.  Ooh what adventures await.

Grace and I did a helicopter tour of the fjords.  We took a 5 minute ride to the helicopter pad, grass field near the fjord.  Thank god Grace was along because she lowered the median age in our helicopter to 65 years old.  One of the guys in our helicopter and his much younger wife play golf with former Vikings coach Jerry Burns in Jamacia where they both winter.  This lead to a 3 minute KQRS Uncle Burnsy riff.

In the end it is good to be 4’10” and 66 pounds.  You always get front row center on a helicopter ride.  I was tucked in the back right corner again

The ride was beautiful but in typical Scandinavian style our pilot greeted us pleasantly and then did not say another word until we landed.

Grace and the chopper.  Is she photobombing or getting photobombed.

After the chopper ride, Grace and I met up with mom, Wendy, Keith and Marissa.  We prepared for a bus tour.  Grace and mom has their first experience paying for a public restroom.  Once that problem was solved it was off on our bus tour.  It should be noted the Grandma Eva was very nervous about missing the tour so she boarded our bus about 20 minutes early.

My view while mom waited on the bus

Our bus ride started up from the fjord.  11 switchbacks and one techno club and we were at the Eagle’s Nest look out. Now this road was narrow and Grandma Eva doesn’t like heights.  It probably felt like she was hanging over the edge of the cliff about half the time.
She was hanging on for dear life

It is “Risky Buisness” getting up these switch backs.  Do you know what the tensile strength of these plastic handholds are?

Let’s go back down this road in a giant bus

I needed to cool off too.

From here we travelled back down the mountain and up and out the other side of Geiranger to the highest point in Europe you can access from the road?? Is that even a thing??

Along the way we saw some amazing views and stopped at a beautiful lake above the fjords

Still gotta go up this road Grandma Eva

Europe’s highest fjordview from a road!!!

The views were amazing at the top but the wind was way up an really whipping around.  We had to put some rocks in Gracie’s pockets to keep her from blowing away.

The view back down towards Geiranger.  This picture doesn’t do the view justice.

The rock stacking thing started in Norway.

Grace it is so windy on this semitransparent platform

From the top we head back down and stopped at a waterfall lookout.  The Norwegian travel industry build a throne for Queen Sonja  because she loved to visit the region and hike.

This day was a winding road.  Grandma Eva still hasn’t unclenches her fists

From here it was a bus ride back to Geiranger.  Mom and Wendy were nervous about missing the boat so they headed back with Marissa and Grace.  Keith and I headed up to the local church.  Supposedly it had some very nice wood carving inside.  We will never know because when we got there it was locked.  Luckily the light was great so we took some pictures outside and head back to the boat.  That was nice because I had Gracie’s passport in my backpack.

Probably one of the best pictures I have ever taken

This is good too.

From there it was back to boat and a sail out of the fjord.  It was sad to leave Geiranger on such a beautiful evening

Sometimes when your in a hurry for the perfect shot your hands get in the way. Our tour guide has the affliction based on the pictures she took for me.

Leaving Geiranger.

Dinner was great

Bed was better.

Tomorrow we hit Olden.  Don’t think the weather will be as nice.
